"Necessary Targets"

V-Day is in full swing, with events happening all over the world.
Women are rising up and raising funds with Eve Ensler's play "The
Vagina Monologues."

"Necessary Targets" is about two Americans working with refugee
women during the war in Bosnia. While "The Vagina Monologues"
tells the stories of individual women, "Necessary Targets" tells
the story of a group of women struggling to know each other and
support each other as they find their own way and their truth. A
cast of eight led by Shirley Knight and Diane Venora bring the
play to life with performances that have been called "marvelous,"
"riveting," and "extraordinary."

If you are in the New York area, we hope that you will join us for
"Necessary Targets."

Scottsdale, AZ
November 1-3, 2002

If you are an avid reader, this is the weekend vacation for you. Book
discussions are great fun. We start by talking about the book and its
characters and often end up so many other places. It may be because when we
read our literature we often see ourselves or someone we know. Sometimes we
simply enjoy the creativity of the author or his or her sense of humor.

Book discussions we have had with friends or in book clubs are elevated
at a Literary Retreat because now we get to have these discussions with new
people. We will gather in Scottsdale to talk about books. We combine a
fabulous weekend vacation in a lovely city with the opportunity to learn more
about our literature through conversations, Literary Salons, on various
genres of literature. We spend all day Saturday in hour long Literary Salons.

On Sunday, since we will all be away from our home churches, I will bring
in gospel singers to bring in the spirit of His word to cap off our
absolutely perfect weekend. Here are the details:

AUTHORS in Scottsdale

To enhance the experience of the weekend even more, I have invited a
number of wonderful African American authors to join us for our Author's
Showcase. This event happens after Gala Dinner on Saturday. We have been
talking all day, now we listen. We have the amazing opportunity to support
our African American authors. We listen as they tell us about their books
and their career plans. We ask questions to show our interest in their
success.

They do a reading from their own book which gives us the flavor of their
writing so maybe if we haven't read the book, we will now. The authors sit
for booksignings, and then take pictures with us. Their presence is a
delightful and special part of our Literary Retreat. All of the books by all
of the authors will be available for purchase in Scottsdale. Go to my
